Jérome Winbetouréfâ Somé, MD, PhD, is a Researcher in Human Nutrition at the Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé (IRSS) in Burkina Faso. A physician-nutritional epidemiologist, he holds a PhD in Nutritional Biology from the University of California, Davis, and a MD in General Practices from the Université de Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
Dr. Somé’s research program centers on evidence-based strategies to improve maternal and child nutrition in West Africa. His work spans the efficacy and policy of food-based interventions, including the development of locally accessible complementary foods, the evaluation of small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS), and the evaluation of policy for healthy and sustainable food environments. He employs robust methodological approaches, from cluster-randomized trials and dietary assessment validation to spatial analysis and cost-effectiveness modeling. His findings are widely published in leading nutrition and public health journals.
As a technical consultant for major global agencies, including the World Bank and IAEA, Dr. Somé bridges research and practical policy. He is also an active educator, serving as a guest lecturer in nutritional epidemiology and public health nutrition at universities across Burkina Faso and Mali. His work is dedicated to generating actionable evidence to reduce the double burden of malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa.
